Steel Price Advantage 1 In case you are not aware, imported parts made of sheet metal (steel) have become even more competitive during the past six months. The U S Government has slapped a duty on imports of raw steel in coil form. As a result, domestic steel mills have increased pricing by over 30% during this period. For example during my former life as a buyer of steel, I was paying just over .30 per pound for steel blanks (that is steel of a certain thickness cut to size). The same material is now selling for just over .40 per pound and is in short supply as many sellers (importers) have been excluded from the market. Imported parts made of steel are not affected by this duty. As a result many OEM's should reevaluate parts made in house or being made by domestic contract manufacturers. Between our lower labor costs and now a major advantage in material costs, we have even larger savings to offer our customers. Please remember that we can do even better on assemblies.
